Reconnecting Twerton

“I love coming down to the football club and meeting up with everyone; I’m so glad that I got involved with it,” said Lyn, a 72 year old who has lived in the local area for the whole of her life and who used to come regularly to matches at Twerton Park with her Dad when she was a youngster. “It’s great! I really love coming to the events and trips out. It’s really good meeting up with the others and having a good laugh. We’ve got to keep this going,” were the comments of Terry, a lifelong Bath City supporter and Twerton resident. “It’s brilliant!” said fellow fan and Bathonian, Basil, “I love everything about it.”

Reconnecting Twerton is a social inclusion project through which Bath City FC is reaching out to offer support to older members of its local community who are living alone. Surrounding the vital factors of physical and mental well-being, the project offers people the opportunity to widen acquaintance and increase their socialisation, develop friendships, be part of a range of social occasions as well as benefit from developing fresh skills through engagement in new and rewarding activities. Initially set up to help tackle issues of loneliness and increased isolation during the Covid 19 related lockdown by helping participants become digitally better connected, the project has widened its geographical scope and the range of its offer.

From its base at the home of Bath City Football Club, Reconnecting Twerton works with a range of partners and agencies to deliver upon its aims through:

· befriending  - we keep up regular contact via phone calls and home visits,

· offering trips out for individuals, small groups as well as the whole group,

· bringing group members together at coffee mornings and lunches,

· organising activity mornings with quizzes, games and films,

· attending special events such as the graduation ceremony of England footballer, Tyrone Mings,

· making available PCs, laptops and tablets while providing tuition in developing essential ICT skills,

· running a range of clubs such as sporting memories and book group,

· engaging in exciting ventures such as radio broadcasting and film making.
